[B] Book Review

Title: Tales of a Korean Grandmother
Author: Frances Carpenter
Publication Company: Tuttle

First story: Why The Dog and Cat are not Friends

Synopsis: Old Koo, a shopkeeper of his own wine shop has neither wife nor children. He lived with only one dog and a cat. Villagers were always curious why they do not see wine delivering to his door but still able to earn a big sum of money. Old Koo only told the answer to the dog and the cat. Years ago before Old Koo opened a wine shop, he worked on a ferry. This night, Old Koo was really generous to share his little wine left to a strange traveler. After their last conversation, the traveler gave Old Koo golden amber and told him to keep it in the wine jug so it will be always full. One day, Old Koo lost the amber and told his pets to retrieve it for him. When the Dog has already got hold of the amber, he handed it to the cat but it lost it.

Reflections: Previously, I thought the story would be mysterious which I would like it to be. However, the story became boring at the end. As I read the story, I liked the part when Old Koo reveals his secret about the wine. I also find this story unrealistic.

Second story: A Story for Sale

Synopsis: Old Yi and his wife lived far away from the village as they were really rich and afraid that people would steal their money. Thus, the husband and wife were real lonely. One day, Old Yi told his servant to find for a story and buy it so it can keep them occupied. The servant searched everywhere but to no avail. Then, he approached a farmer. Thinking upon the servant will pay him hundred strings of cash for just one story, the farmer agreed though he knows he cannot think of one. Then, the farmer saw a great bird and started talking:
"He comes! Step by step! Step by Step he comes nearer! Now he stops to listen! Now he stops to look! He bends down! He creeps! He is off! He is fleeing so he will be safe!"
That is the story the servant bought. Old Yi was really curious to know what exactly the story means as he believes that it has an interior meaning. He repeated the story again and again till night came. On this night, a robber was intending to rob Old Yi, but he escaped in the end. He was frightened by what Old Yi was saying in the house [Old Yi repeated the robber’s actions]. Rom then on, nobody dares to rob Old Yi again.

Reflections: I find this story quite humorous especially when the author wrote about the robber’s facial expressions and his feelings. Certainly, paying the farmer so much money is probably worth it for him- He can kill time as well as scaring robbers away.

[C] Interesting Holiday Experience

Celebrated my Niece’s birthday just yesterday [10 June 2007]. The first thing I did is to shop for some video CDs to cure boredom at home. Then, I ate noodles- I Starved before the party to prepare for a big appetite there. My sister and I then barbecued marshmallows on a satay stick.. The fist and second marshmallows I barbecued melted but the third one stayed at its normal state. >.<>
